About Child Development Sessions

Before we begin working with your child, we would complete Developmental Assessments with children who are 2-6 years of age. Assessments are completed with information provided by the primary parent and ideally with information provided by an educator or teacher who sees your child regularly throughout the week. These assessments give us a holistic snapshot of the child’s developmental capacity and assist us with how we can plan activities for your child to reach their developmental milestones.

The planning and activities put together for your child’s child development session are designed to target areas of development that need additional support or intervention. The Child Development Sessions have a school readiness focus to support children under 6 years of age. These sessions facilitate opportunities for learning for children who may have one or more developmental delays identified in the screening process or be referred to seek additional support by others in their life.

The planning for these activities with children under six years of age would be with a play-based approach. For children who are already in school, these sessions are mostly directed by the practitioner and learning is planned for the individual developmental needs of the child to promote opportunities for growth and scaffold on their current abilities. Children who are already in school have their plan assessed on a term-by-term basis with feedback from the parent/guardian and teacher.

To achieve these goals and outcomes we plan for your child, we would discuss with you and your child their interests and identify their learning style. If your child is nonverbal or pre-verbal, we can assess what their interests and primary mode of learning is by observing them during one or two sessions in the playroom. The activities and resources we would then have available would be provided and the environment set up with materials to be consistent with your child’s interests and style of learning.

Resources and activities are provided to take home with you to complete with your child during the week to continue building on their skills and capabilities. This does not have to be done at home but is strongly encouraged to maximise the value of these sessions.

Before your little one heads off to school, we can complete a ‘Transition to School Statement’ for you to provide your child’s teacher or just for your personal records.

Who would benefit from Child Development Session:

  • Children with diagnosed learning disabilities
  • Children with developmental delays (due to disability, trauma or environment)
  • Children who may struggle with social anxiety at school or when in care.
  • Children who have had limited access to educational environments to develop specific skills.
  • Children who struggle with or need support to develop executive functioning skills (impulse control, social and emotional regulation, time management, cognitive processing etc).
  • Children who may struggle following instruction from an educator or teacher and find a group context overwhelming

What skills will or could my child develop from engaging in Child Development Sessions:

  • Children may grow in confidence with exposure to educational materials and one-on-one support to refine specific skills they need for school or to complete tasks more independently.
  • Children may build resilience and a larger window of tolerance for difficult tasks in a more structured environment
  • Children may develop their pro-social and language skills which will enable them to communicate when they need some assistance
  • Goals and outcomes outlined in their educational plan may begin to be achieved with weekly sessions and follow-up support from parents/guardians at home
  • Improvements observed in a range of delays flagged in the developmental assessments and subsequent screenings
